London-based young designer Raquel de Carvalho won the “Feel the Yarn” contest, promoted by Italian Consorzio Promozione Filati (a yarn promotion consortium) in collaboration with the Pitti Filati fair. She was awarded last June during the previous edition of the Florentine yarns exhibitions prevailing over four other creatives selected by the private Facebook group “FTY for New Designers” in the first phase of the initiative.
The total number of participating designers (all aged between 22 and 35) was 27. Their challenge was to create two knitwear looks with yarns supplied by 28 companies associated with the Consorzio Promozione Filati. Raquel de Carvalho was associated with yarn producer ISY by Torcitura di Domaso. All ten finalist garments were exhibited during the last edition of Pitti Filati in the stand dedicated explicitly to the Contest.
The winner has the opportunity to create a capsule collection of 12 outfits for the SS22 season, entirely Made in Italy and mainly knitted.
«This first edition of “Feel The Contest”, born as a result of the experience made in 2020 with “Feel the Yarn – The Contest” in digital version» explains Federico Gualtieri, Consorzio Promozione Filati’s President «fully confirms the attention that Feel the Yarn we always reserved for the new generations. It was an experiment that ended with a positive outcome surrounded by the organisers and participants’ enthusiasm, called to teamwork in the name of the best Italian know-how. A clear sign of how collaboration among the various players in the sector is the keystone to build the future of Italian spinning and knitwear».
